Personal Branding Yourself For Direct Sales

Personal branding is the idea the YOU are the brand. Brand You. You are not just a direct sales consultant, you are a... makeup expert, jewelry lover, home decor fanatic. Focus on your passion. For example, choose one category from the Avon product offerings (makeup, jewelry, Avon Living home goods) and focus on creating a presence around that category niche. Your passion for that focus will show, and it will become part of who you are as a personal brand.

Use a blog to build your personal brand

If you have a blog or a social media presence, you should spend your efforts promoting, creating content and curating other information about your niche. A blog is one of THE best ways to showcase your personal brand. How does this work? Well, take home decor as an example. Go through the products for home decor. (Avon Living is THE place to go if you love home goods!) Start writing blog posts about those products, about that lifestyle, about home decoration, about entertaining, etc. Pin the products, but Pin MORE than those products. Pin current trends in the home decorating industry. Share home decor ideas through magazines and home decorating websites. Curate home decor photos. Create lists of easy ways to decorate (plugging in a few Avon Living products, of course). You are building your personal brand not by only promoting your Avon Living products, but also by creating a niche expertise and establishing long term trust as a source of valueable information. People WANT to know what the Top 5 Spring Decorating Trends are. They WANT to know how It's Easy To Entertain for Afternoon Tea. (Include the Bright and Cheery Tea Kettle photo and link to your estore). They NEED the super helpful information in your Floral Pillows For a Fast Spring Refresh (Include the Watercolor Fleurs and Bird Pillow Covers photo and link). THIS is the type of information people want, and the more of this you create, the more customers you will see. The more of YOU that you put into it, the more personal it becomes, and therefore more desirable.

Create an image

Let's talk about image a little bit. Brands have logos. Brands are not logos. Your brand should be your beautiful face. And your name. (Not Avon's logo.) You are your brand. If you want to design a "logo" make it your name.

Back to that Avon brand question... selling Avon is what you DO, it is not you. You DO other things, too. (Whatever that might be.. family, dogs, sports, cooking, etc.) So when you brand yourself, you have a title with Avon, you can use the Avon banner on your headshot photo, but you are not the Avon brand, and you can't use the Avon logo for yourself. When you develop your brand presence, you want to share who you are, not only that you sell Avon. People buy from people. It sounds crazy, but instead of saying, "Hi my name is Sarah, and I would like to share the Avon brochure with you." try saying, "Hi my name is Sarah Smith, and I want to help women feel beautiful."

It is important to keep your personal brand consistent. So, if you have a blog, a Facebook page, Twitter, Pinterest... keep those all looking and feeling the same. They should all have your name, your photo as your profile picture, and the same image look and fonts used for images. While you are at it, consider reserving your social media account with your name for all social media tools, even if you don't setup your profiles on those accounts yet. KnowEm? is a super useful tool.

It's official - your brand is you, your presence, and your personality.  (Online and offline). So now what? What exactly are we supposed to do with that?

How to Create Your Personal Brand

Start with the story.
  • Your personal story and your personal values. Master your own story first because when you do, you can more easily empower others.
  • Why you joined Avon and started your own beYOUtiful business. You have to feel confident with your own reasons before you can persuade others. Make it real and engaging.
  • What your "mission" is. Your personal mission. What do you want to accomplish with your beYOUtiful business?
  • The Avon story (make sure to leave this one for last - nail who you are first, then you will be better prepared to share the Avon story.

Begin with engagement.
  • Share your story on social media. Any and every social media you feel comfortable with. However, make sure if you have a social media, you work it. If you never Tweet, shut down your Twitter for now.
  • Talk to everyone about who you are and what you do. In person, online, everywhere!
  • Get your target market to engage; ask them to share what their favorite nail color is, or what they wear for sunscreen.

Develop an image
  • Get a good headshot photo and use that everywhere. If you have a friend that loves to take photographs, enlist their help! Otherwise, work with a local photographer to get yourself a couple of professional looking headshots. Try to update them seasonally, if you can.
  • Pick a visual "look". The color scheme, the images, the personality of your look should be consistent everywhere you have a presence.
  • Choose 2 to 3 colors to always use in the content you create. There is a psychology to color, too...
  • Select 1 or 2 fonts to use consistently, including 1 font to always always use for your name. Avoid frequently used and outdated fonts like Comic Sans, but don't go so fancy that the letters can't be read easily.

Create content
  • Think like a journalist. Create an editorial schedule.
  • Write blog posts. The more the better.
  • Try to create content in a doable quantity, but to gain a following your content also needs to be quality. (Hint, pure promotion is NOT good quality.)
  • Not sure where to start? Set a goal of one blog post per week. If you find you can do more - awesomesauce! Try to avoid doing less (52 blogs a year is not that many). Also, when a post has more than 1,500 words, it gets more social media engagement.
  • Expand your content into ebooks, infographics, videos, etc.

Curate content
  • Think like a museum director. Share relevant, pretty content with frequent rotation.
  • Share content created by other people, and share product information from other companies. I know this sounds counter intuitive, but curating industry knowledge actually creates more credibility for you and customers trust you more.
  • Some marketing speak: "Position Avon as a thought leader." What this means: In your curated content, make Avon an expert, and showcase Avon products as the best choice.

Promote content
  • Think like a marketing executive. Have a plan and a "look".
  • This is where most new reps focus all of their attention. Promotion should be about 1/3 of your total content. Any more than that and your content will be flooded with sales type stuff and people will be turned off.

Dos and Don'ts

What to do
Be real. You are you and nobody else is you. Be authentic. (But not TOO authentic - refer to drama llama)
Be online. Even offline customers will look you up online. make sure your online presence reflects your offline business.
Be valuable. Write a mission statement.

What NOT to do
Be a drama llama. Do not share personal details, like your dog's poop or your recent breakup. Don't ever talk about politics or religion. Customers don't care and it will turn them off forever.
Be everything. You need to create a niche and focus on one thing. If you try to be everything to everyone, you will be spread too thin and you won't be able to focus your efforts.

Real Earnings with Direct Selling

Direct selling is a real business opportunity with real earnings.

Get Your Negative Out

But here's the truth. If you start poking around about reviews for direct selling and reviews for Avon, you are going to find negativity. There are millions of naysayers out there. Some of their arguments are valid, some are just lies. The honest truth is that you will find negative things said about direct selling, for ALL direct sales companies. There is even an entire website dedicated to hating on Mary Kay. (I refuse to link to it). The bottom line is that there is a lot of information on the internet, there is a lot of inaccurate information on the internet and there is a lot of hate on the internet. I have taken most of that with a grain of salt. I am also a skilled researcher, and I devote my energy to tracking down valid and valuable research about beauty and business before I share that on my website. Business, ALL business, is what you make it. It doesn't matter if you are in a corporate office, selling makeup or making fries. There are business opportunities, but you have to want to do the work. Sales IS hustle.

Make an Investment

Direct selling companies all require an investment. Usually that investment is very small ($100 or less). When you join Avon, the cost to become a representative is $15, and you receive an official Avon starter kit. However, I still say that you should invest a full $100. Why? On what? Here's why: Yes, the starter kit is $15 (you get your own estore website at no cost --- MOST direct selling companies charge their reps for the personalized website), and that includes brochures, what's new, a workbook, samples, and full sized product. That will give you what you need to launch your beauty business. I recommend spending a little more to get business cards for yourself. Town and Country is an Avon Advantage Partner and they frequently have a discount on business cards: 250 free and you pay only $5.95 in shipping and handling. I would also go to a local office supply store and pick out a physical planner and calendar. The better organized you are with time and contacts, the more sales you will have! These typically cost around $20. The remainder of that $100 (around $60 left), you will hold onto. This can be invested in different things, depending on how you want to direct your beauty business. You could: buy samples, full size products to demo, bags to deliver product to your customers, branded signage to have tables at events, a domain name and hosting to run your own branded website*, a dedicated phone for your business, towards a laptop to help you sell online, office supplies to stay organized - whatever will help you run your business best! Yes, Avon's startup fee is $15, but a full $100 is an investment in your business that will contribute to your success!

* Avon does not allow personal websites for the purpose of selling product; your branded website has to be your personal brand and cannot have "Avon" in it.

Focus on Sales

Avon and long time reps will have all sorts of tips and suggestions for you when you start. Buy tons of brochures! Make a huge list of your warm market! Talk to 3 people every day! Use products yourself! Great. If you can start with that much.

I have my own tips for new representatives, and those tips probably conflict with everything you see from Avon and other reps.

Sell you. Look, sales are not about selling product, sales is about selling you. YOU are the product. Seriously. And human nature is to trust the human product before spending money on it. I know that sounds weird, but that's human nature. There have been studies and studies in marketing and advertising about the human element in buying. In order to run a sales business with long term success, ethics and JOY, you need to sell yourself, and NOT your products. My first year selling Avon I focused on - my warm market and products. I didn't earn much. My second year, I am focusing on - you guessed it! - selling ME. Direct selling is network marketing, and network marketing is primarily about building relationships. I don't tell everyone I talk to in person that I sell Avon. I don't even talk about Avon. Crazy, right?! The complete OPPOSITE of what everyone says to do. What I do is develop relationships and work on building trust. The crazy thing is that people are now coming to me. "Hey, I heard you sell Avon. Can I buy from you?"

Grow slow. My tips focus on growing sales at a realistic pace. Creating the network takes time. Like, more than a few weeks. It takes years. During this building time, you may not see a lot of sales every campaign. This is where many reps give up, because they do not see the immediate results. Instant gratification does not a business make. Most "brick and mortar" business take 5 years to see a profit. This may also be true for direct sales businesses. Growth is exponential. I see many successful Avon earners who did not get to their high profit margins for years. If they had given up their first year or so in, they would never have seen the profit they do now! Relish in slow growth, but be realistic about it. Actively work on sales and developing your network. Celebrate pockets of success (right before the holidays and in the spring are typically peak buying times).

Don't buy. Unless you can afford to invest more, do not go over that initial amount you have reserved for supplies and demo products. Spend as little as possible on brochures. Buy only as many brochures as you know you can schedule to distribute. If your warm market is 5 women, only buy 10 brochures and then force yourself to get rid of those other 5 brochures. Do not buy too many brochures if you can't develop that large of a market yet. Don't buy a bunch of supplies, like samples, sales tools or bags. Buy ONE pack of the literature bags. I know they are only .80 but buy them one pack at a time. Only buy sample deals from the What's New if you really love the product and can actively market it to your network. Avoid loading up on samples and bags until you have a use for them. If you do want to start building up samples, start with skincare.  Until you begin having campaign orders of $50 or more, do not invest in any of those extras. The bare minimum I suggest your very first order should be, if you do not yet have any customer sales: 10 brochures ($6.49), literature bags ($0.80), and one recurring future brochure, item 030347, ($0.30). IF the only thing you buy during a campaign is brochures, call the order in and Avon will not charge you the OSF (One Simple Fee). You want to be earning based on sales YOU make, not on product you buy.

Learn product. You can't sell what you don't know. You should spend a good chunk of time learning about the products that Avon sells. They are incredible products and many have a long history. These products contribute to having loyal customers, so do your reading and learn about them. Start with the brochure. READ every single page in the brochure, then expand into the online inventory and delve deep. Learn about the product in depth on the estore, and take advantage of product trainings through Avon University.

Challenge yourself. Sales can be achieved, but it does take hustle. Hustle is making sales related connections, with a sense of urgency, but with tact. In order to be successful at making sales, you need to set challenges for yourself. Small goals, at first, will develop into larger goals. "I will give my brochure to 5 people this campaign." "I will ask 2 people to reorder." "I will make $200 in sales this campaign." This is not a competition with other people; this is about finding the right pace for you, and meeting your personal financial goals.

Finding Those Real Earnings

It's time to show you the money! What are the earnings possibilities with direct selling? While there are different earnings charts for every company, the earnings you make depend totally on you. Your earnings are tied directly to the sales volume you make happen. Your compensation is based on your performance.

If you have a $50 order, your earnings are $10. If you have a $300 order, your earnings are $105. If you have a $1000 order, your earnings are $450. Personal sales are completed by you, so you manage your earnings.

Any sales you complete through your estore earns you 20% of that sale, and Avon delivers the order directly to your customer! Once you earn over $25, Avon will send you your earnings. You can receive this profit through direct deposit, or on a prepaid Visa card.

See How It's Done

There is an elite group of women who have worked hard to turn lipstick into life. These women are some of the top earners for Avon, and they are successful because they HUSTLE.

Top earning representatives with Avon truly know how to hustle. Yet, every single woman does it differently. That is the beauty of this beYOUtiful business: this flexibility allows you to earn in the way that is best for you!

What is Direct Selling, Exactly?

Direct selling is the business model where products are developed and tested then distributed to customers through direct channels such as independent sales representatives. There are no "middle men" - no large scale distributors, no retail stores.

Avon Products, Inc. products go directly to the customer, either shipped directly when ordered online, or personally via one of Avon's Independent Sales Representatives.

Sales Channels

Direct sellers make sales face to face or online. Personal face to face  can be made through a representatives existing social networks (friends, family, coworkers, neighbors, groups, businesses) or by prospecting in their geographic area. Online sales can be made through networks online, which expands a representative's prospecting base considerably. Many representatives choose to sell products using both face to face and online channels.

SLM versus MLM

Single level marketing (SLM) direct selling is where a representative buys product from a direct selling company and sells the product directly to customers, gaining a profit on the sale. Multi level marketing (MLM) direct selling is where a representative participates in SLM and also participates in leadership of new representatives, generally with a commission or an incentive.

Avon's 2014 revenue was $8.9 billion.

Why Direct Selling Appeals to Home Entrepreneurs

  • Direct selling is a good choice for:
  • Stay at home moms
  • People with full time employment who want to supplement their income
  • Individuals on disability or are retired and may have limited mobility
  • Retired veterans

Why? Because direct selling has flexibility - you are not confined to specific work hours, driving to a specific location or required to have specific resume skills. It is this flexible alternative to traditional employment options that is probably the most appealing.

In direct selling, there is unlimited opportunity. Direct sales representatives do not have to worry about the product supply chain. In traditional entrepreneurship, the new business has to focus on developing a product or service and identifying the market for that product or service. Product development and manufacturing takes significant time and financial resources. Even a simple at home craft business would have to invest $5000 to $10000 to launch. Direct selling companies typically have a $100 or less investment to launch.

Avon's products include a large, diverse catalog of makeup, skincare, fragrance, bath & body, jewelry, fashion and home, with products for women, men, kids and millenials.

Advantages of Direct Selling

The advantages of a direct selling business model for a sales representative:
  • Create your own work schedule and hours of effort.
  • Ability to enter entrepreneurship with little formal training or education
  • Empowering, especially for women, by creating transferable social and business skills
  • Low start up costs, low risk to maintain, easy to grow, plus profits are tied directly to effort
  • Product catalog available with no development and manufacturing investment

The advantages of a direct selling business model for a customer:
  • Individual human representatives to guide product choices and answer questions
  • Innovative product choices not always available in retail stores
  • Convenience and reliability of service (home delivery by representatives or online shipping)

Freedom of Entrepreneurship

Starting a direct selling business opportunity does not require diplomas, certificates or college degrees. However, direct selling often develops those marketable skills!

  • Communication
  • Time management
  • Organization
  • Innovation and problem solving
  • Customer service
  • Technology literacy
  • Soft skills (creativity, process management, work ethic & social skills)
There are over 18 million people in direct selling. The average cost to start is $100. The risk of loss is incredibly low if you decide to quit. Reasons people are direct selling reps - long term supplemental income, products at a discount, independent entrepreneur flexibility. (DSA 2015 Growth and Outlook survey and 2014 National Salesforce Study).

One Word Resolution?

Every new year we come up with a new year’s resolution. Every year that resolution might fade away, sometime in the middle of, oh, January? I mean, yeah you might keep up that goal for the whole year, but really, most people don’t keep their resolution.

Life happens.

And you forget.

So, to help avoid the resolution slump, Gretchen Rubin has been doing these one word themes as her resolutions. Because one word is sort of easier to handle, and it can encompass a lot.

Learn more about Gretchen in this Beauty For A Purpose post, and on her own site where she talks about habits and the book she wrote.

My one word theme for 2016?

SHARE

I’m going to share products, expertise, opportunity, inspirational quotes, beautiful photographs, social content, stories, and successes. And, hopefully, I’m going to share so much more!

So, here’s to 2016!

Tools for Reps: What's New and Avon WEBTV

What's New

I just sat down on this rainy day with a hot cup of tea, and flipped through the latest catalog. I chose to add some products to my order that will help me sell more, and I picked a few things just for myself!

Normally, I don't share what I plan, but I'll let you in on this secret. Here's what I'm getting:

  • Skincare. I'm going to stock up on Anew skincare. It's available at a special representative price, and I would like one of each to have on hand and to share and show.
  • Body spa. I'm getting some bubble bath at a discount. We go through a lot of bubble bath in my household!
  • Makeup. I want to test concealers and do a video on concealing under eye discoloration and blemishes on the face. All four concealers that Avon carries is available as a demo, so I'm going to get a few colors of each: Extra lasting, Anew Age-transforming, Cream concealer and Concealer stick. I'm also going to test the Invisible Coverage Liquid Foundation. Foundation can be pretty expensive, and this foundation is normally $12 in the brochure, so getting it for $4.50 is amaze!
  • Fashion. I really need a new pair of shoes, but I'm going to wait until next campaign to buy myself some shoes.
  • Jewelry. I absolutely HAVE to have the Inner Wisdom necklace for myself. It's an owl that can be worn as a pendant or as a pin. I am totally in love with owls, so this is a must have for me.
  • Samples. Finally, there are samples for all four of Anew lines: Vitale, Reversalist, Ultimate and Platinum. The samples are buy 2 get 1 free, and I'm going to start mailing them out, so I really need to stock up. There are 5 in each pack, and there's one pack for day, one for night. So, if I get the deal and I choose all of these samples, I can get 120 samples for only a $16 investment.

This particular catalog has a lot of "Unlimited quantities" so representatives that do table events can truly stock up on product right now!

So, here's the deal: I am looking at the latest Avon What's New. These are demo books that give Avon representatives an advance opportunity to see new products, buy stock to sell, and order products at a discount. Representatives can also order sales tools and samples. New representatives have a limit of 1, unless there are special "Unlimited quantities" offers available.

This is special. Back when I used to work retail, we would get huge books of products to order for the store, and we would get cartons of demo products to see, feel, smell and test before ordering them for the racks. Now, many companies - including Avon - are etailers, and are part of the global ecommerce world. Yet, Avon reps can still get their hands on demo products in advance. Reps can order from a What's New 2 campaigns ahead of when that brochure starts. Take my demo order for example: that is all from the What's New for campaign 4, but I can order it now with campaign 2. Campaign 4 won't launch for me until the end of January. When I used to work trade shows, I would give demonstration of products at the booth, so customers would know how it worked.

You can see all of the current What's New catalogs online, but you cannot order anything from a What's New unless you are an official Avon Independent Sales Representative. These advanced products and discounts are exclusively for reps only. But you can Join In and build your own beYOUtiful business!

#AvonWebTV

The other thing I want to talk about is Avon WEBTV. This is a preview video series that is available on YouTube. It is hosted by Tiffany Bartok, a makeup artist from NYC. AvonWEBTV started last May, and it's a great way to stay in touch with the latest new products, get tips from other representatives and feel connected to other Avon representatives! The Avon USA Representatives web channel is the only place online you can see AvonWEBTV: https://www.youtube.com/user/AvonUSAReps

So, Episode 10 was just posted to Avon's YouTube channel 2 days ago. (I am a YouTube channel addict... as soon as one of the people I subscribe to post a new beauty video, I am on it in no time!) My favorite segment is when Rebecca Luedemann gives us a sneak preview of what's coming.

Plus, you can really interact using the hashtag #AvonWebTV on Twitter and other social media. I try to share my #brochureselfie every campaign using the #AvonWebTV hashtag! So.... another secret? When Campaign 5 launches, I will be wearing the new Perfectly Matte Lipstick for my #brochureselfie because I ordered it in my campaign 3 What's New, and I had time to test it out and shoot a selfie wearing it! (Hmm... what color should I demo?)

How To Build A BeYOUtiful Business

Avon has an incredible history, a wonderful product line, and an amazing sisterhood of representatives. Benefits of joining in to the Avon opportunity include flexibility, relationship building, helping women find beauty, and learning valuable business skills such as interpersonal communication, time management, planning and making goals, innovation, customer service, and tracking financials.

Joining Avon is more than selling products. Avon is a way to connect with people, create lasting relationships, empowering others and yourself, and working toward financial independence. You don't need a high school diploma, a college degree, or any special training to be an Avon representative. (Though you do have to be 18).

Campaigns

There are 26 campaigns every year, or a new campaign every two weeks. Each campaign has a dedicated brochure with the current products and pricing.  Brochures and products are divided into the following categories:
  • Makeup
  • Fragrance
  • Skin Care
  • Jewelry
  • Fashion
  • Home
  • Kids
  • Body

Brochures cost 65¢ *or less* depending on how many you order. You will receive one automatically with your order, and they can be purchased in bundles of 10. They become cheaper the more you buy; for example 10 brochures costs $6.49 (64.9¢ per brochure), and 100 brochures costs $21.49 (21.5¢ per brochure). Brochures in Spanish, mark. magalogs, and Avon Living magalogs can also be purchased.

Campaigns run on a two week Representative Processing Schedule, or RPS. Depending on a few factors, including your location, you will be assigned an RPS. Key campaign dates will run for you based on your RPS.

Sales

You work hard to make sales, but you have options on how you make those sales: personal sales and online sales.

Personal sales are those sales that you make in person. These sales can be to anyone in your social network, including family, friends, neighbors, coworkers, acquaintances,

Online sales are sales that are made when a customer orders from your estore. The customer receives that order directly from Avon, so these orders are called Direct Delivery, or DD.

Orders

Orders are placed online through the youravon.com portal. The ordering process allows reps to setup customer information, create invoices to give to customers along with their order delivery, and track orders after they are placed. In order to stay "active" as a rep, you do have to place at least one order every four campaigns; however, you should at least be ordering brochures every campaign.  Any order has One Simple Fee (OSF), which is the shipping and handling fee Avon charges. The order size will determine your OSF and you do not have to pay shipping and handling if you order *only* brochures. It is important to place orders on time, as there are late charges applied to late orders, and it will affect when your order ships and arrives.

Demos

Official Avon representatives can order advanced products at a discount. One of the perks of being with Avon is receiving the What's New brochure, and being allowed to order discounted demo products from the What's New. The discount is typically 20% and the limit is usually one, but there are opportunities where reps can stock up on products so you can have product on hand!

Earnings

The percentage you earn from personal sales depends on your order size. The more you sell, the more you earn! There is a minimum $50 order before earnings percentages start, but $50 is a very achievable sales goal for every campaign. Earnings for orders over $50 start at 20% and step up to reach 50% once your sales levels are over $1,575 in a campaign. Online sales earn 20%. Demos, samples, sales tools and brochures all contribute to your sales earnings total, and online sales count toward your campaign total order also!

Promotion

How you promote your Avon beauty business is completely up to you. Promote a little, or a lot! There are so many things you can do to promote your beYOUtiful business; here are 10 promotion ideas:
  • Give brochures to anyone and everyone you meet.
  • Use and wear Avon products, and promote when you receive compliments.
  • Make labels for your brochures.
  • Invest in business cards.
  • Leave brochures on neighbor's doors.
  • Participate in an event with a table, brochures and a small amount of product inventory.
  • Invest in samples.
  • Offer a birthday discount to prospects.
  • Wear an Avon branded shirt. (See Town & Country for more Avon branded merchandise.)
