Strategies for Direct Sales Facebook Parties

Let's have a party! Facebook virtual parties can be just as effective, if not better than home, in person parties. It's easy to get this party started. I'm giving you some great ideas on how to make Facebook parties work for your direct sales, especially if you have been trying Facebook to promote and it's just not working the way you want.

Facebook is fussy. Many representatives in direct sales are finding Facebook advertising challenging or not providing the return expected. Some of this has to do with Facebook's policies and algorithms. Some of this has to do with content that the direct seller chooses to push. Part of the problem is that Facebook's "Events" feature is meant to promote live events, not virtual events. I think that's a design failure on Facebook's part, but that's neither here nor there.

Considerations when creating a Facebook party: Event, Guests, Content, Engagement. EGCE doesn't spell anything cool, sorry. CEEG or GEEC either.

Event

To create a Facebook party, first make sure you have a Facebook business page for your direct sales business. (Creating business events from a personal page can cause problems with Facebook because it may violate their terms of service). From your Facebook business page, Create a new, PUBLIC event. I cannot stress this enough. So many people create social media content that is hidden behind their privacy filter. Make your Facebook Events PUBLIC. Make your Instagram PUBLIC. No one can see your content if it's not.

The Event Photo should be carefully crafted. You want something visually interesting, not busy, and low on text overlays. Guests will see this as a small thumbnail at first, so make sure it represents your event in a visually stimulating way. Also, adhere to the 1920 x 1080 image size in your design.

Make your Event Name powerful and relevant.

The Location should say Virtual, or Online.

Date/Time can be a single date or a time frame. On one hand, a single, short event will create a sense of urgency with guests. On the other hand, a time frame of several days expands guest participation because they can jump in at any time. A single, several hours long event or a 2 or 3 day stretch are the ideals;  anymore than 5 days can get annoying.

Co-hosts is useful if you are partnering up with another representative, or if you have a hostess. Another trick for Co-hosts? Add yourself, and as many friends as are willing to "co-host". What this will do is broaden your invite reach. Keep the invites low-ish though, or it will be id'd as spam.

Ticket URL is meant to purchase real live tickets to a real live event. I'd like to say use the link to your estore here, but I have to admit I have not tested this, and I'm not 100% sure what the policies are. If I discover this information somewhere, I will surely update you!

Description is very important. Copywrite this carefully. Your description should give specific information about what guests will experience, as well as the products or product lines you will be sharing.

I would choose Community > Shopping as the Category. Just making your event goals transparent may increase participation. Do not mislead your guests.

Leave Only hosts can post on the event wall unchecked. You want people to post; conversation is engagement and engagement leads to sales!

Guests

You want as many guests to join your event as possible. Invite all of your friends, ONCE! Don't be a spammer. Have your co-hosts invite their friends, once.

Promote your event outside of Facebook, with the linky back to the Event page.

Send out reminders leading up to the event to encourage more people to jump in.

Content

Have a purpose when you create a virtual Facebook party. Are you trying to:

  • Introduce a new product or product line?
  • Create a community?
  • Answer questions about your opportunity?
  • Promote a specific campaign?
  • Acquire new leads and customers?

Make sure you focus your content on that purpose. Answer questions about other products and services, if they come up, but make sure you have a niche focus for your party. Focus on one product, or a newly released product, or successes customers have had. Even make it a problem solving event, if multiple customers have had questions about something.

Engagement

Your shares are critical. Share content that is related to the focus of your Facebook party, and work to create guest engagement. If people are posting on the wall, asking questions, making comments, participating or responding, those crickets mean no sales for you.

Hold Party Games to Make Guests Feel Like Individuals

OK, so there is this social media concept called "gamification". Essentially, humans want to enjoy their experience, so when interaction is turned into a game, they tend to engage more. I'm not going to go into this in too much detail (yet) because I haven't learned enough about it, but the same idea holds true in educational settings. (If you have kids, ask them if they have ever played Kahoot! in school and see their reaction.) Get kids involved by making learning fun. Get adults involved by making social media fun. Have party games about your products and about your customers. Make the games personal and relevant to individuals. Make guests feel special. Bring them in, and make it about them.

Take a look at my list of Facebook Games!

Offer Promotions Coupled with a Call To Action

When people shop, they want products that will work for them, but they also want to feel like they are getting something special. Offer as many promotions and discounts as you can. Give them exclusivity. Encourage action based on losing the opportunity to a discount. "20% discount on x product, available only from 6pm to 7pm today!" or "Free shipping coupon code expires Tuesday. Order now."

Provide Explicit Product Images, Information and Instructions on How To Order

Sounds crazy, right? Sell more product and get more customers by saying, explicitly, THIS is my product, THIS is what it does for you, and THIS is how you can get it. Don' make potential customers hunt for how to buy, or work to get the products you are promoting. Engagement that leads to sales will decline if it's too hard for them. Make it super simple to spend money on what you are selling.

Want to promote more and get more sales? Go create a Facebook event, and engage your guests with great content!

Tools for Reps: What's New and Avon WEBTV

What's New

I just sat down on this rainy day with a hot cup of tea, and flipped through the latest catalog. I chose to add some products to my order that will help me sell more, and I picked a few things just for myself!

Normally, I don't share what I plan, but I'll let you in on this secret. Here's what I'm getting:

  • Skincare. I'm going to stock up on Anew skincare. It's available at a special representative price, and I would like one of each to have on hand and to share and show.
  • Body spa. I'm getting some bubble bath at a discount. We go through a lot of bubble bath in my household!
  • Makeup. I want to test concealers and do a video on concealing under eye discoloration and blemishes on the face. All four concealers that Avon carries is available as a demo, so I'm going to get a few colors of each: Extra lasting, Anew Age-transforming, Cream concealer and Concealer stick. I'm also going to test the Invisible Coverage Liquid Foundation. Foundation can be pretty expensive, and this foundation is normally $12 in the brochure, so getting it for $4.50 is amaze!
  • Fashion. I really need a new pair of shoes, but I'm going to wait until next campaign to buy myself some shoes.
  • Jewelry. I absolutely HAVE to have the Inner Wisdom necklace for myself. It's an owl that can be worn as a pendant or as a pin. I am totally in love with owls, so this is a must have for me.
  • Samples. Finally, there are samples for all four of Anew lines: Vitale, Reversalist, Ultimate and Platinum. The samples are buy 2 get 1 free, and I'm going to start mailing them out, so I really need to stock up. There are 5 in each pack, and there's one pack for day, one for night. So, if I get the deal and I choose all of these samples, I can get 120 samples for only a $16 investment.

This particular catalog has a lot of "Unlimited quantities" so representatives that do table events can truly stock up on product right now!

So, here's the deal: I am looking at the latest Avon What's New. These are demo books that give Avon representatives an advance opportunity to see new products, buy stock to sell, and order products at a discount. Representatives can also order sales tools and samples. New representatives have a limit of 1, unless there are special "Unlimited quantities" offers available.

This is special. Back when I used to work retail, we would get huge books of products to order for the store, and we would get cartons of demo products to see, feel, smell and test before ordering them for the racks. Now, many companies - including Avon - are etailers, and are part of the global ecommerce world. Yet, Avon reps can still get their hands on demo products in advance. Reps can order from a What's New 2 campaigns ahead of when that brochure starts. Take my demo order for example: that is all from the What's New for campaign 4, but I can order it now with campaign 2. Campaign 4 won't launch for me until the end of January. When I used to work trade shows, I would give demonstration of products at the booth, so customers would know how it worked.

You can see all of the current What's New catalogs online, but you cannot order anything from a What's New unless you are an official Avon Independent Sales Representative. These advanced products and discounts are exclusively for reps only. But you can Join In and build your own beYOUtiful business!

#AvonWebTV

The other thing I want to talk about is Avon WEBTV. This is a preview video series that is available on YouTube. It is hosted by Tiffany Bartok, a makeup artist from NYC. AvonWEBTV started last May, and it's a great way to stay in touch with the latest new products, get tips from other representatives and feel connected to other Avon representatives! The Avon USA Representatives web channel is the only place online you can see AvonWEBTV: https://www.youtube.com/user/AvonUSAReps

So, Episode 10 was just posted to Avon's YouTube channel 2 days ago. (I am a YouTube channel addict... as soon as one of the people I subscribe to post a new beauty video, I am on it in no time!) My favorite segment is when Rebecca Luedemann gives us a sneak preview of what's coming.

Plus, you can really interact using the hashtag #AvonWebTV on Twitter and other social media. I try to share my #brochureselfie every campaign using the #AvonWebTV hashtag! So.... another secret? When Campaign 5 launches, I will be wearing the new Perfectly Matte Lipstick for my #brochureselfie because I ordered it in my campaign 3 What's New, and I had time to test it out and shoot a selfie wearing it! (Hmm... what color should I demo?)

How To Build A BeYOUtiful Business

Avon has an incredible history, a wonderful product line, and an amazing sisterhood of representatives. Benefits of joining in to the Avon opportunity include flexibility, relationship building, helping women find beauty, and learning valuable business skills such as interpersonal communication, time management, planning and making goals, innovation, customer service, and tracking financials.

Joining Avon is more than selling products. Avon is a way to connect with people, create lasting relationships, empowering others and yourself, and working toward financial independence. You don't need a high school diploma, a college degree, or any special training to be an Avon representative. (Though you do have to be 18).

Campaigns

There are 26 campaigns every year, or a new campaign every two weeks. Each campaign has a dedicated brochure with the current products and pricing.  Brochures and products are divided into the following categories:
  • Makeup
  • Fragrance
  • Skin Care
  • Jewelry
  • Fashion
  • Home
  • Kids
  • Body

Brochures cost 65¢ *or less* depending on how many you order. You will receive one automatically with your order, and they can be purchased in bundles of 10. They become cheaper the more you buy; for example 10 brochures costs $6.49 (64.9¢ per brochure), and 100 brochures costs $21.49 (21.5¢ per brochure). Brochures in Spanish, mark. magalogs, and Avon Living magalogs can also be purchased.

Campaigns run on a two week Representative Processing Schedule, or RPS. Depending on a few factors, including your location, you will be assigned an RPS. Key campaign dates will run for you based on your RPS.

Sales

You work hard to make sales, but you have options on how you make those sales: personal sales and online sales.

Personal sales are those sales that you make in person. These sales can be to anyone in your social network, including family, friends, neighbors, coworkers, acquaintances,

Online sales are sales that are made when a customer orders from your estore. The customer receives that order directly from Avon, so these orders are called Direct Delivery, or DD.

Orders

Orders are placed online through the youravon.com portal. The ordering process allows reps to setup customer information, create invoices to give to customers along with their order delivery, and track orders after they are placed. In order to stay "active" as a rep, you do have to place at least one order every four campaigns; however, you should at least be ordering brochures every campaign.  Any order has One Simple Fee (OSF), which is the shipping and handling fee Avon charges. The order size will determine your OSF and you do not have to pay shipping and handling if you order *only* brochures. It is important to place orders on time, as there are late charges applied to late orders, and it will affect when your order ships and arrives.

Demos

Official Avon representatives can order advanced products at a discount. One of the perks of being with Avon is receiving the What's New brochure, and being allowed to order discounted demo products from the What's New. The discount is typically 20% and the limit is usually one, but there are opportunities where reps can stock up on products so you can have product on hand!

Earnings

The percentage you earn from personal sales depends on your order size. The more you sell, the more you earn! There is a minimum $50 order before earnings percentages start, but $50 is a very achievable sales goal for every campaign. Earnings for orders over $50 start at 20% and step up to reach 50% once your sales levels are over $1,575 in a campaign. Online sales earn 20%. Demos, samples, sales tools and brochures all contribute to your sales earnings total, and online sales count toward your campaign total order also!

Promotion

How you promote your Avon beauty business is completely up to you. Promote a little, or a lot! There are so many things you can do to promote your beYOUtiful business; here are 10 promotion ideas:
  • Give brochures to anyone and everyone you meet.
  • Use and wear Avon products, and promote when you receive compliments.
  • Make labels for your brochures.
  • Invest in business cards.
  • Leave brochures on neighbor's doors.
  • Participate in an event with a table, brochures and a small amount of product inventory.
  • Invest in samples.
  • Offer a birthday discount to prospects.
  • Wear an Avon branded shirt. (See Town & Country for more Avon branded merchandise.)
  • Learn about the products then share your knowledge with people you talk to.
